Burns Supper 2008 Raised £2,100 for the Northern Fells Group

Posted: 21 February 2008

The Burns Supper in Caldbeck Parish Hall was celebrated a day late on January 26th but still proved a wonderful tribute to Robert Burns and was thoroughly enjoyed by the 90 diners. A group of Scots friends from just over the border ensured we had a genuine Scottish flavour to the evening’s entertainment with some more local talent providing songs and poems.

Malcolm Threlkeld, our Chairman, welcomed everyone and gave the Selkirk Grace before handing over to Jim Hodge our MC for the evening. The Parade of the Haggis was led by Piper Taylor Edwards and Alex Smith addressed the Haggis in time honoured fashion.

After the main course Beryl Hibbs gave a delightful and moving reading of ‘To a Mouse’, and later Ellie Woodcock sang ‘Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon’ with Antoinette Ward. After Jim Cox had proposed the Loyal Toast Piper Taylor Edwards played a medley of tunes to great appreciation. It was a virtuoso performance.

Colin Frood spoke to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns and clearly knew his subject well. Then David and Robin Ward, Richard Woodcock and Jim Cox sang ‘Green grow the rashes - o’ with great verve. John Reid gave a very amusing speech to toast the Lassies, but met his match with Liz Rae’s equally enjoyable response. Honours were even! Richard Woodcock brought us back to the Bard with ‘Ae fond kiss’ and Jim Cox gave the vote of thanks before we all sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ at the end of a most enjoyable and entertaining evening.

The food was excellent, prepared and served by Margaret Brough and Joan Gate with a wonderful team of assistants and waitresses. Malcolm and Mary Threlkeld, David and Judith Kent, Joyce, Richard and Ellie Woodcock, Pat Shaw, Richard Brough, Sarah Gate, Alison Scott, Alice and Maddy Hallewell, Catherine Holdsworth, Anne, Kelly and Emma Armstrong, Marina Sewell, Laura Brough, Susan Pattinson, Linda Coulthard, Antoinette and David Ward, all  joined Margaret and Joan to give their time voluntarily to help raise funds for the Northern Fells Group and the Committee is immensely grateful for everyone’s support.

The Northern Fells Group is a Community Charity operating in the seven parishes of Boltons, Caldbeck, Castle Sowerby, Ireby with Uldale, Mungrisdale, Sebergham with Welton and Westward with Rosley. It operates a number of services to benefit local residents including a flexible minibus service for people without their own transport, a Lend a Hand scheme for people with disabilities and for carers, help with claiming benefits, youth activities and lunch groups.
